Handmade Felt Artworks & Wearables, Workshops & Demonstrations

About the Artist

Felting is the process of compressing fibers into a non-woven fabric. Felt making is not a well known textile art.  But, it is an ancient one that has its roots in functionality with the creation of boots, hats, outer wear, saddle blankets, and housing.  Today, felt has become the base of wildly imaginative sculptural creations.  Through studies with local, national and international feltmakers, Cynthia has learned to do some of both creating 2 and 3 dimensional artwork, as well as wearables including hats, scarves and purses.

Cynthia enjoys any opportunity to demonstrate or teach felting as she believes creating public awareness of the felting process and sharing the potential of this medium are ongoing opportunities. In an effort to share the world of felting to those outside of textiles, Cynthia has participated in cultural & visual arts boards and artist selection panels for municipal projects.  Within the world of textiles, Cynthia belongs to local fiber guilds, and international felt making associations.

Her work has won several awards in exhibitions sponsored by the Fine Art’s League of Cary; has been included in juried exhibitions at the Independent Art Company in Wilmington, NC, and the textile competition at the Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair in Asheville, NC.;  has been showcased at the Duke Eye Center; and has been featured in the Green Hill Center for the Arts Collectors Gala & Winter Show.  Her piece 'Getting Out of My Own Way' won 1st place in the Durham Arts Guild’s 55th Annual Juried Art Show. Most recently, Cynthia won an Honorable Mention for her piece "ALF Series: Sample 5" which was then purchased for the permanent collection of the Maria V Howard Arts Center Collection in Rocky Mount, NC.

For 7+ years, Cynthia was a member and board member of Cary Gallery of Artists in downtown Cary.  As of April 2017,  Cynthia has become the owner of Cocoon Gallery in Apex NC.  Cocoon Gallery features functional artwork by 70+ local masters artisans including ceramics, glass, jewelry, metal, textiles and wood.  For more information about Cocoon Gallery, go to CocoonGalleryNC.com.
